Three reasons owning a Watsonville home is so desirable

At times lost in the shadow of Santa Cruz to the north and Monterey to the South, Watsonville offers affordability, natural open space and strong community ties that make it a desirable place to own a home.

In fact, the Wall Street Journal pointed to the Watsonville area as one of the most desirable places in the U.S. to live and work in the publication’s annual “Top Emerging Housing Markets in the U.S.”

This index is based on a locality’s employment fundamentals, as well as its lifestyle amenities and options. The list also identifies housing markets that the WSJ determines are optimal for homeowners and other investors, based on projections for favorable price appreciation. Of the WSJ’s top 20 markets, Watsonville is ranked No. 2.

As the Bay Area becomes increasingly dense, discerning new homebuyers can look toward outlying communities like Watsonville for the following three reasons:

  1. Proximity to large job markets: Only a short drive to Silicon Valley and the ongoing tech boom, Watsonville boasts a prime location to provide suburban living near enough to job-rich metro areas. Located less than 60 miles from San Jose, Watsonville has become a prime bedroom community for those seeking big-city employment options while living in a small, sedate community near the beach.

  2. Access to nature and open space: Living in Watsonville puts residents mere minutes away from redwood forests, majestic mountains, beaches and more. Amenities range from agriculture tourism to days at the beach, and from wine tasting to rugged hikes. Watsonville is also home to the Wetlands of Watsonville Nature Center, which celebrates and educates on the diversity of wildlife habitats found in the area. What’s more, Watsonville boasts great weather that provides more opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.

  3. A small town feel: With around 54,000 people living in Watsonville, residents will experience a welcoming small-town feel. Its historic downtown is lined with storefronts from the late 1800s. The city offers a rich, diverse, and proud culture with a tangible, tight-knit neighborhood feel. Known as a safe town with very little major crime, Watsonville is perfect for family living.
